Top 5 iBeacon innovators
One of the latest innovations that may very well revolutionize the way we shop is the iBeacon. The iBeacon software was developed by Apple to get businesses and customers connected in- and around stores. iBeacons are small indoor positioning systems that give signals to smart-phones and tablets via bluetooth. Since 2013 these devices have been adopted in certain stores and they emit 4 types of signals:
1. Proximity marketing (signals emitted before the customer enters the store)
2. Check-in coupons (once the customer is in the store and based on their location in the store);
3. Additional Info on products
4. Contact less payments
Bodi.me offers solutions to solve the challenges raised by omni-channel shopping and so we’re always looking out for companies that have the same objective at heart! So here’s a list of companies that are using the iBeacon software in ingenious ways. If you know of any more please comments at the bottom!
Paypal took the opportunity given by Apple to diversify its activity and offer its customers a broader service. Now if the shop has the Paypal IBeacon and you have the Paypal app on your tablet or phone then the bill gets sent via bluetooth and voila! you’re all paid without lifting a finger or getting your credit card out. If your shop the Paypal device is simple to use, as you just have to plug it in a laptop via USB. We reckon that’s pretty cool!
When it comes to Beacons, Estimote is probably the one you’ve heard about as they’re page 1! Estimote is a Polish/American company that started in 2012. The Beacons developed by the company offers all 4 services we listed above and what we appreciate as designers is their cool look and colours.
We were most happy to meet Benjamin Durand of Happy Beacon, the French player in this industry, at the Decoded Fashion Meet-up event last week in Paris. Happy Beacon offers iBeacons that cover up to 300 meters radius and that easily adapts to different types of locations, including museums, fashion shops, airports and train stations. Their sensors are so intelligent that they can push notifications to you about the products you were checking out online previously and are now within reach to buy.
Swirl is an American company based in Boston. The device they created is small and there’s a big emphasis on encryption and security. What the software does is building a profile of the customers’ purchasing behavior. The store may collect customers’ gender, shopping preferences and frequency. It’s an add-on software to your existing retailer app and apparently very easy to set-up.
At first, Kontakt was a company implementing solutions to help the visually impaired in their everyday life, enabling them to go to museums or make easier navigation in public spaces… They recently seized the opportunity raised by the iBeacons: they offer the same marketing services as the others and also a feature to help the visually impaired to find things more easily for example their seat in a stadium, the right meeting room in an office building or a certain store in a shopping mall. New technology used to help those that need it most, we like!
